Emergency preparedness and response

Protecting people, the environment and safe operations

At Vår Energi, emergency preparedness is a core part of how we ensure safe, responsible and resilient operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Our commitment is to protect people, safeguard the environment and maintain the integrity of our assets and communities.

Clear principles for emergency management

Our emergency preparedness and response programme is anchored in the Emergency and Crisis Management Principles and supported by the Board-approved Health and Safety Policy, Environment Policy, and Climate & Energy Policy.

These policies describe how we plan for, manage and recover from emergencies by ensuring clarity in roles, responsibilities and escalation criteria across all operated assets.

We follow the PEAR prioritisation model (below). This provides a consistent foundation for decision-making during time-critical events.

Understanding and Managing Emergency-Related Risks

We identify and assess potential emergency scenarios through:

  • Environmental and oil-spill preparedness analyses
  • Barrier and major-accident hazard evaluations
  • Environmental impact assessments and permitting processes
  • Company-wide enterprise-risk management

Our Environment Policy commits us to systematically minimise planned and accidental discharges, protect biodiversity and mitigate pollution risks. Our Climate & Energy Policy guides our work to reduce emissions and manage climate-related risks that may influence emergency planning and response capacity.

A dedicated, multi-level emergency response organisation

To ensure rapid and coordinated action, Vår Energi maintains a structured emergency response organisation:

  • 1st line tactical response at the installation or site
  • 2nd line Emergency Response Team coordinating operational support
  • 3rd line Crisis Management Team providing strategic oversight
  • Specialist teams, incident management teams, and business-continuity support

This structure aligns with the principles described in our Health and Safety Policy, emphasising emergency planning, incident investigation and continuous improvement.

Training, exercises and continuous improvement

We regularly conduct:

  • Emergency drills and scenario-based exercises
  • Joint exercises with industry partners, including NOFO
  • Verification and assurance activities
  • Systemic learning from incidents and near-misses

Our H&S framework underscores the importance of emergency planning, hazard identification and continuous improvement in emergency capability.

Collaboration with authorities and stakeholders

Emergency preparedness depends on cooperation. We work closely with relevant Norwegian authorities, emergency organisations, partners and local stakeholders.

Cyber security

Cyber security is an integral part of our preparedness and resilience work. We work systematically to prevent, detect and respond to cyber threats that could impact safety, operations and business continuity across both information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT).

A Structured, Risk‑Based Cyber Security Programme

Our cyber security programme is aligned with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and supports our ability to govern, identify, protect, detect, respond and recover from cyber threats. Performance is measured and monitored through internal activities and audits, complemented by regular external assessments, and findings are tracked to drive continuous improvement.

Collaboration, Training and Exercises

We collaborate with relevant governmental and industry bodies to identify emerging risks, share information and strengthen cyber resilience. Training and exercises are a key part of our preparedness: we build awareness and competence for all employees and regularly test our ability to manage cyber incidents through mandatory training and scenario‑based exercises.
